Industrial Welding in Virginia
Sons of Thunder Welding runs a traveling specialty crew built for Virginia's data center and cold storage mechanical scope — chilled-water and glycol loops, refrigeration piping, pipe spool fabrication, supports and skids. We come to the site, or we back up your mechanical contractor when the schedule gets tight.
In short
We are an industrial welding and fabrication crew that travels into Virginia for data center and cold storage mechanical work — not your everyday local shop, and we won't pretend to be.
Virginia is the densest data center market on earth, and the build keeps accelerating. Northern Virginia's "Data Center Alley" in Loudoun and Ashburn crossed roughly 4,000 megawatts of operating inventory by the end of 2025, with vacancy near half a percent and the next year's supply almost entirely pre-leased — and as land in Loudoun tightens, the boom is spreading south and west into Prince William, Stafford, Caroline, Henrico, Culpeper and Spotsylvania. A single Caroline County campus broke ground on a $3 billion, 900-megawatt project; a Stafford campus added another $2 billion and 192 megawatts. State analysts peg the industry at roughly a quarter of all North American data center capacity, about $9.1 billion in annual GDP, and tens of thousands of jobs. Every one of those buildings is a mechanical job underneath the white-box finish: chilled-water and glycol cooling loops, closed-loop liquid-cooling piping for high-density AI racks, pump skids, process piping, and miles of supports and hangers — mission-critical mechanical piping that has to be welded clean, pressure-tight and on a brutal schedule. The same story runs cold across the Commonwealth's food economy. Cold storage and refrigerated distribution are expanding hard — a 245,400-square-foot freezer-and-cooler facility near the Port of Virginia in Suffolk with nearly 50,000 pallet positions, a $27 million Frederick County expansion built around a CO2 cascade refrigeration system, and food-processing investment like a $113.9 million poultry-cooperative build in Rockingham County. Those builds run on cooling and process piping, sanitary stainless and food-grade stainless process piping, and the pump skids and racks that tie it all together. That is the work we travel for. As a traveling pipe welding and field welding crew based in Northwest Indiana and Southwest Florida, we run full-scope design, fabrication and install — and we'll tell you straight what we can take on before anyone commits.
The opportunity
Virginia, by the numbers
- ~4,000 MWNoVA data center inventory (end of 2025) — largest market on earth
- $3B / 900 MWSingle Caroline County campus now under construction
- ~25%Share of all North American data center capacity in Virginia
- 245,400 SFNew Suffolk cold storage — ~50,000 pallet positions
What these builds need
The mechanical scope we run
We don't chase everyday local welding in Virginia. We target the mechanical scope that data center and cold storage builds generate — as a traveling specialty crew or as a mechanical contractor's overflow crew when the schedule outruns the manpower. Builds like these typically require:
- Data center process piping and cooling-piping welding — chilled-water and glycol loop piping, closed-loop liquid cooling lines, and the mission-critical mechanical piping that keeps high-density rooms online
- Cold storage and refrigeration-system support — process and cooling piping, evaporator and condenser tie-ins, and the kind of cold storage welding that has to hold under load
- Sanitary stainless welding and food-grade stainless — stainless process piping fabrication and install for food-grade and refrigerated facilities
- Pipe spool fabrication in the shop, shipped and field-welded on site — pump skids, supports, hangers and the steel that carries the loads
- Structural steel and miscellaneous metals — platforms, racks, equipment supports and field connections that tie the mechanical scope to the building
- Shutdown and turnaround welding plus plant maintenance welding — tie-ins, repairs and expansion work that has to land inside a tight window

Virginia — FAQ
Do you actually work in Virginia, or are you based out of state?
We're a traveling crew. Our home bases are Northwest Indiana and Southwest Florida, and we mobilize into Virginia for data center and cold storage mechanical projects that fit what we do. We're upfront about that — we're not a local Ashburn or Richmond shop competing for everyday welding. We come in for specialty mechanical scope or to back up a mechanical contractor who needs an extra crew on the schedule.
What kind of data center work do you take on?
The mechanical scope underneath the building — data center process piping, chilled-water and glycol cooling loops, closed-loop liquid-cooling piping for high-density racks, pump skids, supports and hangers. Builds like the ones going up across Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford and Caroline counties run on exactly this kind of mission-critical mechanical piping. We fabricate spools in the shop and field-weld them on site, or we run install crews alongside your team.
Can you handle cold storage and food-grade refrigeration work?
Yes — that's a core piece of what we travel for. Cold storage and food plants need cooling and process piping, sanitary stainless welding and food-grade stainless process piping, plus the skids and racks that tie it together. Virginia's freezer and food-processing build-out — places like the Suffolk port-side facility and the Frederick County CO2 cascade plant — is exactly the kind of work our crew is built for.
Will you work as an overflow crew for a mechanical contractor?
That's one of our main roles. When a mechanical contractor lands more data center or cold storage scope than their crews can cover on schedule, we mobilize as a traveling overflow crew — pipe welders and fitters who show up ready to weld, fabricate spools, set supports and hit the milestone. You stay in control of the job; we add the manpower and specialty capability.
What are your crew's certifications?
Our welders are AWS-certified, and the crew is OSHA 10 and 30 trained. We're insured and bonded. We'll scope every job honestly — if a project needs qualifications or code work we don't carry, we'll tell you straight rather than overpromise. We don't cut corners, and we don't take work we can't do right.
